Massachusetts has licensed behavior analysts since 2013 — the earliest of the five states in this series, and eight years ahead of North Carolina. A market that has been regulated that long has a different texture: the license is a settled fact of employment rather than a recent adjustment, and the workforce has had a decade to shape itself around it.
The shape it took is unusual. Massachusetts holds 3,891 BCBA certificants against 4,047 RBTs — very nearly one analyst per technician, where Texas runs about five and a half technicians to every analyst. Hiring here is far less about triaging volume and far more about moving quickly on a small, credentialed, well-courted population.

A decade-old license, an analyst-heavy certificant base, and steady rather than spiking demand.
Massachusetts has licensed behavior analysts since 2013, through the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions — the earliest start date among the five states in this series, and one of the 41 jurisdictions (40 states plus the District of Columbia) that regulate the profession.
BACB, "US Licensure of Behavior Analysts," bacb.com — as accessed 2026-09-15.
BACB's region-specific tool shows 8,173 certificants in Massachusetts — 4,047 RBTs, 3,891 BCBAs, 193 BCBA-Ds and 42 BCaBAs. Technicians are barely half the certificant base, which is not how most states look.

Massachusetts is the only state in the set where analyst certificants roughly match technician certificants. Whatever produced it, from the hiring chair it inverts the usual advice: the volume-triage tooling that a Texas or North Carolina employer needs first is not what an employer here reaches for first.
Massachusetts employers posted 7,315 BCBA and BCBA-D job postings in 2025, up 19% year over year from 6,132. Postings requiring or preferring the credential — not a count of unfilled positions.
BACB / Lightcast, "US Employment Demand for Behavior Analysts: 2010–2025," report updated 01/2026.
Set 7,315 postings against 4,084 BCBA and BCBA-D certificants living in the state and you get roughly 1.8 postings for every resident analyst certificant — arithmetic across the two sources. Postings are not vacancies and certificants are not job seekers, so read this as pressure, not as a shortfall.

Demand is national. What it costs you depends on which half of the org chart is scarce where you are.
US employer demand for BCBAs — measured by job postings — hit 132,307 in 2025, up 28% year over year, and has risen every year since 2010. Massachusetts' 19% rise is below that national pace, which is roughly what a mature market looks like: the competition is constant rather than accelerating.
BACB / Lightcast, updated 01/2026. Postings requiring or preferring the credential, never an unfilled-position count.
Nationally the org chart leans the other way. BACB reports 246,109 active RBT certificants worldwide versus 81,566 BCBAs as of end of 2025 — roughly 3 RBTs for every BCBA, with the RBT population growing about 2.5x faster (25.2% vs. 10.0% year over year). Those are net active credential holders globally, not US employment. Massachusetts sits at about 1:1. If national commentary about drowning in technician applicants has never quite described your inbox, that gap is why.

Turnover is still turnover, though, and the hedge matters: RBT turnover can sometimes exceed 100% annually — "sometimes" is the source's word. Typical RBT turnover runs 30–75%; corroborating data shows large ABA providers averaged 103.3% all-employee turnover in 2024 and mid-size providers 89.3%. A smaller technician bench does not mean a stable one.

Three things that matter more in an analyst-dense market than ranking ever will.
Résumés are read and parsed on intake and applications are scored as they arrive, so the first human look already has an order and a reason attached. Candidates worth talking to get a self-booking link for the right calendar — in-app availability, tokenized atomic booking, an .ics for both sides, 24-hour and 2-hour reminders. Outreach drafts are generated for you, and a human approves every single message before it sends. There is no approve-all, by design.
BCBA, BCBA-D, BCaBA, RBT, BT, QBCBA and QASPS are first-class credential types, each with its own verification state and expiry date, and verification runs a defined lifecycle — unverified, pending, verified, failed, expired, revoked — with an immutable audit entry behind every change. In a state that has licensed analysts since 2013, the certification and the state license are separate facts about a candidate, and a hiring record should be able to hold both without someone remembering which is which.
In a market this tight, the most valuable candidates in the building are often ones you already met. Import past applicants from any spreadsheet export (CSV/Excel) and bulk-score them against today's openings — staged import, fuzzy duplicate detection, a review queue before anything lands, provenance and consent controls that hard-block what shouldn't be contacted. The reason an analyst said no two years ago is frequently no longer true.
No state licensing workflow. SherStaff does not file, renew, or check anything with the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions. It tracks credential type, status and expiry on the person.
No automated credential verification. Screening is automated. Verification is a person checking the state board or the BACB registry and recording it, with an audit trail.
No personal calendar sync yet (Google/Microsoft). Scheduling runs on in-app availability and tokenized booking, which does work today.
No CentralReach or Rethink integration yet. It's on the roadmap. Today your data exports cleanly (CSV) for entry into your practice-management system.
Yes, and it has since 2013 — through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions. It is one of 41 jurisdictions (40 states plus the District of Columbia) that license or regulate behavior analysts, and the earliest of the five states covered in this series.

RBT is a BACB certification rather than a Massachusetts credential, so there is no state RBT register to check it against. The state license applies to behavior analysts, through the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions.
SherStaff files nothing and checks nothing with that board on your behalf. It holds credential type, verification status through a defined lifecycle, and expiry date on the person; a recruiter performs the check and records it, and every change writes an immutable audit entry. Verification is a human step by design, not a gap.
It changes what you know before the first call rather than how large a pile you can sort. Every application is scored 0–100 against that opening's real requirements, factor by factor with the reasoning shown — credentials, experience, distance and commute, language — and expired, mismatched or missing credentials are flagged before you open anything. Weights are yours to tune per organization.
The bigger lever in a market this tight is elapsed time. Candidates worth talking to get a self-booking link for the right calendar, with tokenized atomic booking, an .ics for both sides and 24-hour and 2-hour reminders — instead of four days of phone tag while they talk to someone else.
